Pisgah

Pisgah is located in southeastern Jackson County in the northeastern corner of the state. It has a mayor/city council form of government.

History

Pisgah Gorge The first white settlers began to move to the Pisgah area after Indian Removal in 1836, mainly during the 1840s and 1850s. The first church, which also doubled as a school, was built in 1869. The first post office was established in 1878, and the area was named after Mt. Pisgah, which in the Bible is the peak from which God showed Moses the Promised Land. The Pisgah School District was established in 1900, and Pisgah High School was accredited in 1925.

The Pisgah community relied mainly on farming for its economic survival throughout its history. The town was incorporated in either 1946 or 1947. In 1961, Andover Togs of New York located a factory near Pisgah; the facility closed in 1996. In 1967, the town completed a new municipal building and a new post office, and a new Masonic Hall was also built.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Pisgah recorded a population of 886. Of that number, 98.1 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 0.6 percent as two or more races, 1.4 percent as Hispanic or Latino, 1.1 percent as American Indian, 0.1 percent as Asian, and 0.1 as Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander. The town’s median household income was $47,125, and the per capita income was $29,018.

According to 2020 Census estimates, the workforce in Pisgah was divided among the following industrial categories:

  • Educational services and health care and social assistance (49.7 percent)
  • Manufacturing (21.8 percent)
  • Retail trade (5.8 percent)
  • Public administration (4.9 percent)
  • Transportation and warehousing, and utilities (4.9 percent)
  • Construction (3.6 percent)
  • Professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services (3.2 percent)
  • Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and extraction (2.6 percent)
  • Other services, except public administration (1.3 percent)
  • Wholesale trade (1.3 percent)
  • Arts, entertainment, and recreation, and accommodation and food services (1.0 percent)

Education

Schools in Pisgah are part of the Jackson County school system; the town has one elementary school and one high school.

Transportation

County Road 58 bisects Pisgah, entering the town from the south and exiting to the east. County Roads 60, 61, and 88 all run east from town, and County Road 83 runs south from town before curving north.

Events and Places of Interest

The town maintains baseball and softball fields, and a pavilion that can be rented for special occasions.

Formed by three creeks and dropping more than 1,000 feet from the top of Sand Mountain, Pisgah Gorge is a popular tourist destination with its scenic waterfalls. It is located just southwest of the town.
