Taylor

Taylor is located in both Geneva and Houston Counties in the southeast corner of the state, with most of the town lying within Houston County. It has a mayor/council form of government.

History

Taylor was first settled in the 1870s. The town was named after an early family, the Taylors, who was instrumental in securing the first post office. The first school in town opened in 1884, a one-room schoolhouse heated by a wood stove to which students had to take their own water. The Central of Georgia Railroad was built through Taylor in 1901, leading to further expansion of the town. Businesses in the area included a sawmill, cotton gin, turpentine distillery, and a variety of stores. Taylor was incorporated in June 1967 and held its first municipal elections soon thereafter.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Taylor recorded a population of 2,742. Of that number, 83.1 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 9.5 percent as African American, 6.0 percent as two or more races, 3.9 percent as Hispanic, 0.4 percent as Asian, and 0.3 as American Indian. The town’s median household income was $46,729, and the per capita income was $18,191.

  • Transportation and warehousing, and utilities (4.7 percent)
  • Finance and insurance, and real estate and rental and leasing (3.4 percent)
  • Wholesale trade (2.2 percent)
  • Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and extraction (0.3 percent)

Education

Public school students in Taylor attend Houston County schools; no public schools are located within the city limits.

Transportation

State Highway 52 runs northeast-southwest through Taylor, and County Road 59 runs north-south.

Events and Places of Interest

The town holds an annual Taylor-Made Festival that features a beauty pageant for various age groups, a car show, live music, and fireworks.
