Pres. Bill Clinton shakes hands with one of the survivors of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study at a White House ceremony on May 16, 1997. The event featured a formal apology from Clinton on behalf of the U.S. government for its participation in the notorious public health experiment. To the right is Anniston native David Satcher, at the time head of the Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention and later U.S. Surgeon General.
