Southern Redbelly Dace

The southern redbelly dace (Phoxinus erythrogaster) range in Alabama is limited to northern and southern tributaries of the Tennessee River. The beautiful colors developed by the males of the southern redbelly dace and many other Alabama minnow species attract females during spring spawning seasons. These colors usually disappear after spawning has ended.
