The novel The Americanization of Emily, by Alabama native William Bradford Huie, was adapted to film in 1964 starring James Garner and Julie Andrews. Garner plays Charlie Madison (loosely based on Huie), an unheroic man charged with making a film that casts the U.S. Navy in a heroic light during the D-Day invasion of World War II.
