The Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company (ADDSCO) was founded in 1916 in Mobile and manufactured warships for the U.S.
Navy during both world wars. The company was often the city's largest employer and contributed to urban development with
the construction of the Bankhead and Wallace tunnels.
