John Robert Lewis was a central figure in the civil rights movement, inspired by the Mongomery Bus Boycott and the words of Rev. Martin Luther King. He was brutalized during the Selma to Montgomery March and the Freedom Rides, helping draw national attention to the protests. A native of Pike County, he entered politics in 1981 as an Atlanta city councilman and today serves in the U.S. Congress.
