Holland McTyeire Smith (1882-1967) was a general in the United States Marine Corps during World War II who has been called the "father" of modern U.S. amphibious warfare. He grew up in Seale, Russell County, and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1901.
