"Old Beeswax"
Raphael Semmes had achieved the rank of brigadier general by 1865 and escorted Confederate President Jefferson Davis as he
fled Richmond, Virginia, near the end of the war. He was briefly jailed following the war, but was soon released and elected
probate judge in Mobile (although he was never allowed to serve), where a waterfront statue was erected in his honor in 1900.
