Peanuts

Henry County soil is not generally well suited for agriculture, but the introduction of synthetic fertilizers in the early twentieth century brought mass cotton production to the area. By the early 1920s, the boll weevil had decimated the South's cotton yields, and Henry County switched to growing peanuts. Today, about one-half of the yearly U.S. peanut harvest is grown in southeastern Alabama.
