As this map indicates in yellow, cane used to cover large portions of Greene, Hale, Marengo, Perry, and Sumter counties in the region where the Tombigbee and Black Warrior Rivers meet. The map also notes the location of the Vine and Olive Colony settlement of French refugees, east of Demopolis.
