The county seat of Benton County (now Calhoun County) in northeastern Alabama was established in Jacksonville in 1833. The name was changed to Calhoun County in 1858 to honor secessionist Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. The county seat was moved to Anniston in 1899.
