On June 5, 1956, the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth challenged segregation law in a sermon at Birmingham's Sardis Baptist Church. Four days earlier Alabama Attorney General John Patterson had banned most activities of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
