A cowhand in the Black Prairie region of Hale County, Alabama, in 1941. In the 1930s federal programs subsidized conversion of cropland to pasturage, which along with other factors such as the founding of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association during World War II led to increased cattle raising in Alabama.
