East of Huntsville, Mount Monte Sano (Spanish for "mountain of health") rises to 1,600 feet above sea level and is the showcase of Monte Sano State Park. The mountain sits amid a number of other peaks that lie within the southernmost reaches of the Appalachian mountain chain.
