Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893) was the nineteenth president of the United States. He presided over the end of Reconstruction in the South. As a young man he was a lawyer and fought for the Union in the Civil War. Following the war he served terms in the U.S. Congress and as governor of Ohio before his contentious 1876 presidential victory by one electoral vote.
