Benjamin Hawkins

Benjamin Hawkins (1754-1816) was a federal agent to the Southeastern Indians from 1796 until his death in 1816. Although sympathetic to Native American cultural traditions, he worked to implement the plan of civilization, an effort to encourage Indians to adopt European American agricultural, legal, and social practices.
