Cantigny Monument

The Cantigny Monument in Cantigny, France, commemorates the first major battle fought by American troops during World War I. Units under the command of Lee County native Gen. Robert Lee Bullard led the attack that captured the village in May 1918 and then withstood German counterattacks. The arrival of the Americans in the area and their subsequent victory here allowed French troops to engage the Germans elsewhere and help bring about their eventual defeat that November. Bullard's success let to his appointment as commander of III Corps composed of the First and Second Divisions.
