Bess Bolden Walcott
co-founded the school's all-black Red Cross Chapter in 1918. During
World War II
she served as acting field director, aiding the
Tuskegee Airmen
and others in need in the area. She also played an integral role in the establishment of the
Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site
, in large part through her work to preserve the legacy of
George Washington Carver
.
