Winfrey "Wimp" Sanderson

Florence native Winfrey "Wimp" Sanderson (1937- ) began his career with the University of Alabama's basketball team in 1960 as a graduate assistant. The following year, he was named an assistant coach, and served in that capacity for 20 years and then was named head coach in 1980. He left the University of Alabama in 1992 as the program's most successful coach to date, having won five SEC tournaments and winning the title of SEC coach of the year three times.
