Red Mountain Cut National Natural Landmark

In this photo, U.S. Highway 280 runs through Red Mountain Cut National Natural Landmark towards Birmingham. The feature, located in the Tennessee Valley and Ridge Physiographic Section, is of geological significance for its many fossils and of historical interest for its exposed iron and coal seams, reminders of the region's mining and industrial heritage. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1987.
