Janie Shores

Butler County native Janie Shores (1932-2017) was the first woman to serve on the Alabama Supreme Court. She practiced law in Selma and Birmingham after graduating from the University of Alabama Law School and in 1965 became the first female faculty member at the Cumberland School of Law. She was elected to the State Supreme Court in 1974 as a Democrat and served until 1999. In 2004, she served as one of the members of the special State Supreme Court that voted to deny Chief Justice Roy Moore's appeal of his removal from that office.
