Gretchen Knief Schenk

Gretchen Knief Schenk (1901-1989) served as president of the Alabama Library Association (ALLA) from 1949-1950. She first came to Alabama as a library consultant in 1945 and conducted studies aimed at improving service in county and statewide library systems. During her tenure as president of ALLA, she led the organization's first unsuccessful efforts at desegration. After her retirement, she resided in Foley, Baldwin County, until her death.
