Amistad Mural

This is one of six murals painted for Talladega College's Savery Library by artist Hale Woodruff in 1938. It is a tribute to the sacrifices made by and the bravery of enslaved individuals who escaped and the people who aided them on the Underground Railroad. The paintings are collectively known as the Amistad Murals because three of them depict scenes from the Supreme Court case surrounding the kidnapping and subsequent repatriation of dozens of people from what is now Sierra Leone by slave traders aboard the sailing ship Amistad.
