Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) and wiregrass (Aristida beyrichiana) are both adapted to an ecosystem that experiences frequent burning. Recovery programs for this threatened plant community, and the wildlife that depends upon it, includes purposeful and controlled burning every few years to clear out invasive species.
