Holy Ground Battlefield Park

Holy Ground Battlefield Park is located in White Hall, Lowndes County, on the banks of the Alabama River. It commemorates the site of the Battle of Holy Ground, an episode of the Creek War of 1813-14. It was made famous in the poem "Red Eagle," which mythologizes Creek leader William Weatherford's escape by leaping from a bluff into the Alabama River. Holy Ground was believed by Creek leaders to be magically impenetrable, but the Creeks were decisively defeated by U.S. forces under the command of Gen. Ferdinand Claiborne.
