LaGrange College Historic Site

Civil War re-enactors gather at the LaGrange College Historic Site in Leighton, Colbert County, which commemorates the first chartered college in the state of Alabama. It opened in 1830 and remained active until the Civil War, when many students at the all-male academy left to join the Confederate military. The campus was burned in 1863 by federal forces under Col. Florence Cornyn. The site is now a living-history park featuring a pioneer village, a welcome center, and a wedding chapel; it is operated by the LaGrange Living Historical Association.
