USS Cassin Torpedo Damage

The stern of the USS Cassin (DD-43) suffered extensive damage when it was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland on October 15, 1917, during World War I. Blount County native Osmond Kelly Ingram was killed attempting to save the ship. It was repaired at the docks in Queenstown, Ireland, and return to service on July 2, 1918. The ship was decommissioned in 1933 and sold for scrap in 1934. The ship’s bell is preserved in a monument outside the Harrison County Courthouse in Cynthiana, Kentucky.
