Peytona vs. Fashion Horse Race

This 1845 Currier & Ives print commemorates the race between the Thoroughbreds Fashion, a mare bred in New Jersey, and Peytona, a mare raised and trained by Lauderdale County horse breeder James Jackson at his Forks of Cypress plantation. The race was a media sensation because it was billed as a “North versus South” match in the newspapers of the time; it drew some 100,000 spectators to New York’s Union Course racetrack. Peytona emerged as the victor.
