Bankhead Highway

This map shows the route of the portion of the formerly named Bankhead Highway that ran through Alabama. Now US 78, it runs from Aiken, South Carolina, to Memphis, Tennessee. It was established through the efforts of the Alabama Good Roads Association in 1916 and was named for Alabama politician John Hollis Bankhead. Publisher John Asa Rountree and suffragist Alma Rittenberry were also noted supporters of the Good Roads Movement in Alabama.
