Walter B. Jones
(1895-1977) poses here with the
Hodges meteorite
, the only extraterrestrial object to hit a human. Jones was a
geologist
and archaeologist who worked tirelessly to save and study the
Mississippian
-period burial mounds that are now preserved in
Moundville Archaeological Park
in
Hale County
. The Jones Museum at the site is named in his honor.
