Author and scholar Jan Willis (1948- ) was born in Jefferson County. She is the author of several academic books on Buddhism and a personal memoir, Dreaming Me: An African American Woman's Spiritual Journey, which chronicles and reflects upon her journey through academia as an African American woman.
