Tuskegee National Forest

Understory growth begins to return after a controlled burn by the U.S. Forest Service in Tuskegee National Forest. Prior to human occupation, fires regularly swept through the area, and thus most native plants depend on fire for their seeds to germinate. Controlled burns help native plants compete with invasive alien species that are not adapted to fire.
