This set of maps shows the expansion of population in Alabama from 1820, two years after its founding, to the height of its economic power derived from plantation agriculture fueled by enslaved labor in 1850. The huge growth in population in the Black Belt, the center of cotton culture in the state, is clearly evident in the deep red band across its middle.
