Gulf Coast Satsumas

During the 1920s, Alabama enjoyed a thriving satsuma industry, but fruit-killing freezes during the 1930s and 40s crippled it. During the 1990s, Alabama Agricultural Experiment Stations researchers set out to revive the satsuma industry and developed a microsprinkler irrigation system that has proved highly effective in protecting satsumas during frigid temperatures.
