Stephen Decatur

Stephen Decatur (1779-1820) is considered the first war hero of the post-Revolutionary War period, being famous for naval victories in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812. He achieved the rank of captain at the young age of 25 and served as U.S. Navy Commissioner from 1816-1820. The city of Decatur in Morgan County was named in his honor.
