Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) was the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1930-41) which sent Patterson v. Alabama, involving the jury makeup of one of the Scottsboro Trials, back to the Alabama Supreme Court in 1935 with an expectation that the court would reverse its verdict. Hughes previously had served as governor of New York and U.S. Secretary of State, and campaigned for president in 1916.
