In 1976, Florence native Fran McKee (1926-2002) became the first woman unrestricted line officer to attain the rank of Real Admiral in the U.S. Navy. She was one of the first women to attend the Naval War College and the first woman to lead the Naval Security Group, Naval Education and Training, and the Navy's Human Resources Management.
