Livingston State Teachers College, 1953

Students walk near the entrance to Livingston State Teachers College (now the University of West Alabama) in Sumter County in 1953. Prior to the 1950s, the school was almost exclusively for women, but Pres. William Wilson Hill made recruiting servicemen returning from World War II a priority, and the male student population increased dramatically in the ensuing years.
