Phenix City, Part 1

During the 1940s a gambling syndicate took over major civil and social institutions of Phenix City, Russell County, preying upon soldiers from nearby Fort Benning (now Fort Moore) in Georgia. In the early 1950s, concerned citizen Hugh Bentley teamed with attorney and former state legislator Albert Patterson to fight corruption in the county by forming the Russell Betterment Association.
