1860 Presidential Election Cartoon

This cartoon by Currier & Ives portrays a satirical baseball game between the 1860 presidential candidates in which Republican Abraham Lincoln (far right) has defeated (left to right) John Bell, Stephen A. Douglas, and John C. Breckinridge. Published just prior to the election in support of Lincoln, it depicts him holding a wooden rail labeled “Equal Rights and Free Territory” and wearing a belt inscribed “Wide Awake Club.” Breckinridge, a Southern Democrat, holds a bat labeled “Slavery Extension” and wears a belt that says “Disunion Club.” John Bell of the Constitutional Union party wears a belt that says “Union Club” and holds a bat that says “Fusion.” Regular Democratic nominee Douglas wears a belt labeled “Little Giant” and holds a bat labeled “Non Intervention.”
