Nathanael Greene

Nathanael Greene (1742-1786), shown in this portrait by noted artist Charles Wilson Peale, was a major general of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He was a close advisor to Gen. George Washington and was commander of the U.S. forces in the southern theater of the war. The portrait is part of the collections of Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia. Greene County is named in his honor.
