Alabama's State Capitol, in Montgomery, Montgomery County, was constructed in the Greek Revival style in 1851 on the foundations of the previous capitol, which burned in 1849. The capitol is also a working museum and several areas of the building are open to the public, including the old Senate chamber, which is restored to its Civil War-era appearance. The rotunda features eight murals by Mobile artist Roderick MacKenzie that depict periods of Alabama history. Visitors can also climb the cantilevered spiral staircases designed and built by famed nineteenth-century bridge builder and engineer Horace King. The building houses the offices of the governor and other members of the executive branch and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
