Judge Frank M. Johnson set the course for his contribution to the civil rights movement in the case of Browder v. Gayle, the Montgomery bus boycott case, in which he and Richard T. Rives of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed that segregation of public facilities was unconstitutional.
