Joseph E. Johnston

Virginia native Joseph E. Johnston (1807-1891) was a general in the U.S. Army who joined the Confederacy in 1861. He fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars prior to his service the Civil War, during which he commanded the Army of Northern Virginia. Alabama politician and educator J. L. M. Curry served under him in the Army of Northern Virginia as a member of Alabama's Home Guards.
