William Bartram (1739-1823) was a naturalist, artist, and nurseryman who is best known for his Travels, a monumental scientific and literary work describing the indigenous peoples, flora, and fauna he encountered during his journey through southeastern North America from 1773 to 1777. This portrait of him was painted around 1808 by famed artist, inventor, and naturalist Charles Willson Peale.
