Missionary Lee Compere, shown here with his second wife Sarah Jane Beck, moved to Alabama in 1822 with his first wife, Susannah Voysey Compere. The couple became embroiled in struggles between white and Creekslave owners and the issue of Indian removal. A charcoal portrait of Compere, probably based on this photograph, was displayed in the First Baptist Church in Montgomery. The original portrait is now in storage, but a photograph of the portrait remains on display.
